“Recovery and Conservation of LaSalle’s Ship, The Belle”

The Belle was a French vessel that sank off the coast of Texas in Matagorda Bay in the 1680’s.  The French explorer LaSalle was the leader of an expedition with four ships that were supposed to colonize the mouth of the Mississippi and provide maps and charts of the area as well as establish a fort.  A large amount of trade goods were onboard for trading with the local indians and were found during recovery of the vessel. The expedition was a disaster since the supply ship sank in a storm, another was taken by pirates and a third had a mutiny and returned to France.  The Belle was eventually lost in a storm while LaSalle was on land.  The Texas Historical Commission along with the Nautical Conservation Research Laboratory at Texas A&M University began the recovery and restoration project in 1996-1997. The artifacts have been undergoing preservation techniques and extensive study.  The use of testing methods such as radiography, which is used in industry, has been employed to identify and save some of these artifacts in the past. Now with the recent developments in computed radiology, it has been a valuable tool in identifying and conserving these items.
